How good is borehole water for human consumption?
For the most part borehole water offers a safe, clean supply of underground water. The earth acts as a natural filtration system that removes most harmful bacteria and substances. That being said, it is always advisable to perform a lab test to verify the quality of the water before the water is used for human consumption. Once the borehole has been in operation for a while, we can send samples to a lab to perform a SANS-241 water quality test.
The test will tell us if there are any harmful substances we need to filter out. Depending on what your needs are and the quality of the water that your borehole produces we can install additional filtration and purification systems to provide you with clean drinking water.
Do you need to treat borehole water for irrigation purposes?
Generally speaking, borehole water is fit for irrigation purposes. We do recommend doing a PH level test to see if the PH levels are lower than 5, which might require some intervention. Furthermore, if the water produces an odour or is discoloured in any way, a water quality test is advised.
What are the signs that my borehole water could be contaminated?
The challenge is that certain types of contamination does not produce visible or easily discernible signs. It is always better to have the water tested. There are however some obvious clues that you should look out for such as:
- The water has an odour
- The water colour is not clear
- You start to suffer from an upset stomach that does not go away
- Your house’s piping starts to corrode

What type of borehole water quality tests do we provide?
There are more than 30 factors we test for including a variety of harmful bacteria, harmful metals, dissolved solids, PH, electrical conductivity, and water hardness. Of these, the most common threats we identify is the Ecoli bacteria (which can cause severe diarrhoea), lime (which blocks you pipes), iron (which corrodes your pipes) and fluoride which will cause your teeth and sanitaryware to stain yellow.
Tests are conducted in reputable laboratories and results take between 16 – 21 working days to be provided.
Once we receive the test results, we analyse the data and provide the correct solution for your specific borehole which might include installing additional water filters to deliver the right quality water for your needs. It is important to note that results differ from property to property and must be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
